FIRE Number Calculator

The FIRE Number Calculator estimates a investment and time value estimate for your scenario from the quantities, rates, period, units and other assumptions requested on the page. Replace the example values with your own fire number figures and recalculate after changing an assumption. Use it to compare scenarios, then verify any current rate or fee before acting.

Calculate the FIRE Number, the target amount of money to be accumulated for early retirement, using the 4% Safe Withdrawal Rate rule, and estimate the time to FIRE from the current savings rate and return.

The rule 4% is the standard value.

The average long-term return on stock markets is about 7% per year.

What is the FIRE Number and how is it calculated?

FIRE, Financial Independence, Retire Early, is a concept that aims to accumulate money to the point where the return on investment can cover lifetime expenses without working.

FIRE Number Formula

FIRE Number = Annual Expense ÷ Withdrawal Rate (%) × 100
Example: Expenditure 30,000 baht/month = 360,000 baht/year
FIRE Number = 360,000 ÷ 4% = 9,000,000 baht

Time to fire.

Calculated from the future value of savings when money accumulates equal to the FIRE number, which depends on the current capital, monthly savings rate and return on investment. The more you save and the higher the investment yield, the shorter the time to FIRE.

Frequently asked questions

What's the FIRE Number?
The FIRE Number is the target amount of money to be accumulated for early retirement, based on the 4% (Safe Withdrawal Rate) rule, which states that you can withdraw 4% from a portfolio per year without exhausting the portfolio for life. Calculated from: FIRE Number = Annual Expense ÷ 0.04
Where's the 4% rule coming from?
The 4% rule comes from the Trinity Study in 1998 which found that withdrawing 4% per year from a portfolio invested in 60% equity/40% debt would leave money for at least 30 years in most cases. For FIRE that retires sooner, some use 3-3.5% for more safety.
How much savings do you need to fire fast?
The more you save, the faster you get to FIRE. If saving 10% takes about 40 years, saving 25% takes 32 years, saving 50% takes 17 years, and saving 75% takes just 7 years. The key is to reduce costs and increase revenue at the same time.
What should I invest in to earn the FIRE Number?
For FIRE in Thailand, prefer to invest in Index Funds both Thai and foreign LTF/RMF funds for tax deduction and SSF average long-term return is 6-8% per year recommended to spread risk and long-term investment

How to use the FIRE Number Calculator

Use this page to test a specific fire number scenario. Enter your own values in the calculator above, review the units beside each field, and recalculate after changing an assumption. The result updates the fire number estimate instead of relying on a generic example.

  1. Build a baseline fire number case with figures that match your situation.
  2. Run a second fire number case after changing the rate, period, quantity or other key assumption.
  3. Record the difference between the two fire number results and the input responsible for it.

Inputs for the fire number estimate

For this fire number calculation, check the quantities, rates, period, units and other assumptions requested on the page. The result is designed to show a investment and time value estimate for your scenario, not a guaranteed provider price or official decision.

How the fire number result is calculated

The calculator projects value over time from the entered amount, rate, period and contribution assumptions. Reusing the same fire number inputs will produce the same estimate, which makes the page suitable for controlled scenario comparisons.

Checks for a fire number decision

Confirm any current rate, threshold or provider rule that could change the final amount. For fire number, Use the result as a planning estimate and confirm any rate, rule or threshold that may have changed before acting.
