The calculation examples of percent are commonly used in everyday life.
Example 1: Find 10% of 500 baht
Formula: (10 ÷ 100) × 500 = 0.1 × 500 = 50 baht
How to use: Enter 10 in the "percent" field and 500 in the "Base number" field → the result is 50 baht
Example 2: Calculate discount purchase 1,200 baht reduce 20%
Discount: (20 ÷ 100) × 1,200 = 240 baht
Net Price: 1,200 - 240 = 960 baht
How to use: Enter 1,200 in the field "Starting price" and 20 in the field "Discount" → Get discount 240 baht and net price 960 baht
Example 3: Salary increased from 25,000 to 27,500 baht How many more percent?
Formula: ((27,500 - 25,000) ÷ 25,000) × 100 = (2,500 ÷ 25,000) × 100 = 10%
How to use: Enter 25,000 in the field "old value" and 27,500 in the field "new value" → The result is increased 10%
Sample 4: Sell 80 pieces of all products 200 pieces How much is percent?
Formula: (80 ÷ 200) × 100 = 0.4 × 100 = 40%
How to use: Enter 80 in the "Comparison" field and 200 in the "Total" field → the result is 40%
General Calculation Errors
In calculating percent, users often fall into the same trap. Please check that you do not make the following errors:
- Confused between "percent of number" and "change percent"
The price reduction from 1,000 baht to 800 baht Many people think that the reduction 200 baht = 20%, which is right, but if you ask "how much discount" you have to think (1,000 - 800) ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 20% (which happens to be the same number, but different formula) - I don't understand percentage point vs percentage change.
Interest rate rise from 2% to 3% = "rise 1 percentage point" or "rise 50% of 2%" (because 3÷2=1.5=50% increased) People often confuse which word to use - Forget percent must start with the original number, not the subtract/add result.
Price 100 baht increase 20% = 120 baht and reduce 20% =? Many people answer 100 (wrong) but actually = 120 × 0.8 = 96 baht because each calculation uses a changed base. - Incorrect addition of percent (5% + 3% ≠ 8%)
Discount 10% per member card + discount 5% QR = 15%? No Multiply instead 0.9 × 0.95 = 0.855 = Discount 14.5% all - No detail in the "overlapping" cut.
Price before tax 100 baht Add 5% (tax) = 105 baht If after tax = 105 ÷ 1.05 Not 105 - 5 = 100 Adding minus and dividing gives the difference in percent
